Twitter – what it is and what’s the point?

Seems like Twitter is all the rage these days, and the response time from their servers shows it. The website response is horrible right now, and from what I’ve read on the net it has been for a time. This may just be growing pains since as they add users, and then need to back that up by adding more servers, bandwidth, etc. So what IS Twitter? If you hit their site, you don’t immediately get a lot of information about WHAT is it that it does. Even the about page is remarkably sparse. Twitter is like a mini-Blog that you can update via IM, phone, or the Web. But it’s not intended to be a blog like Wordpress or LiveJournal, instead its for short, up the minute, “here’s what I’m doing NOW” kinda of posts… only one of two sentences. The big reason to use something like Twitter is the ability to just fire off quick updates by typing into Gmail chat or AIM. That way your friends will see your update instantly as long as they’re online OR they’ve got their phone. Would I have any use for this? Hell no, but I can see the younger crowd flocking to this. Twitter provides you with a “badge” that you can put on your Myspace page or your blog which will show “instantly” what you’re up to if you’re posting via Twitter. Again, prolly nothing the over 25 crowd will be into, but the kids will eat this up.
