Want an invite to What.cd? There are two ways of going about it… the first requires somebody who can get you an invite, the other is by hitting up the IRC channel for what.cd.
Before attempting this you need to know that what.cd is a ratio site. In other words, this ain’t PirateBay. You can’t just leech until you’re done and drop the file. You need to maintain a ratio on the site. So only try to join What.cd if you are serious about keeping a good upload/download ratio and just not going to join just to download as much as possible and not upload anything.
To join follow these steps:
Download an IRC client. I’ve used MIRC for years… give it a shot. You can download it here www.mirc.com.
Once installed join the What.cd IRC server: irc.what.cd Port 6667.
Once you have connected join the channel #what.cd-invites
DO NOT GO TO ANOTHER CHANNEL AND ASK FOR AN INVITE, YOU WILL BE BANNED FROM THE CHANNEL OR IGNORED
When in the channel read the instructions that are given.
UPDATE: Ok the admins of what.cd contacted me and there is an update to the process. You MUST provide a speedtest.net screenshot before entering the queue. Also obtain some screenshots of your ratios on other private sites, if you belong to them. If you want the full scoop they have a handy link with full info here.
When you get invited to an interview room you will be asked a few question about yourself, how much you know about music e.g. do you know what a FLAC file is? You might need to provide an image of your upload/download ratio of another private Bittorrent site(s). You’ll be asked to show your upload/download speed from SpeedNet. So before you go to an interview room be sure to have uploaded your upload/download ratio to a personal web space, Imageshack, etc for quick access.
Type !queue speedtest_link_goes_here into the channel and you will be added to the waiting list to be interviewed for an invite. Be patient waiting in the queue can take friggen forever, seriously… up to 4 hours or even longer. It must be worth it though, they’re serious about the people the let in.
If they accept you and are willing to give you an invite they will ask for your email address and then they will send you an invite. Follow the instructions and you’re off to go. The process is long… but worth it.
I stumbled upon your site trying to get a what.cd invite. Unlike some, I actually read this article and applied its suggestions, to resounding success. I’m now a power user over there, and an avid reader here. Thanks a lot!

Now that’s just great. I’m an expat living in Korea, and just for that, my IP is automatically banned from the IRC invite server. Reason? “Your country is full of spammers”. Thanks for the primal discrimination guys…

Hi. I’m having a little problem here. Hope somebody can help me out… My freaking country is banned from joining the IRC invite channel for What.CD. (To be honest, I’m not sure how this happened since 48 hours before I was taking the interview and messed up in the V0 and V1 questions…) anyway… The thing is that after my 48 hours temp ban I tried to rejoin to do the interview again and guess what… My country was banned!… Well, If anyone is willing to give me (or trade for a Demonoid invite) a What.CD invite I’d be very grateful. I have the ratio screenshots from private trackers to prove I’m not a “hit n’ run” type of guy and the direct link to my speedtest…. Anyways. I managed to acquire unauthorized access to an account and gave myself an invite.
Use a proxy from another country and you can easily get around those country-bans.

I’m in India and I’m in a position to get a what.cd invite from an acquaintance. How could I register at what.cd? What would be the consequences of registering using proxy ? Would the tracker catch me when I login from my home connection afterwards? Or is there any other way to register since invites to India are banned. Now how if any friend helps out to register in my place from an unbanned country using my invite and email address and then I could use the account from India afterwards. Would the change in IP get my account banned ? Any valuable suggestions. Kindly opine. Thanks in advance.

Do NOT trust people saying they have invites to give out. They will ask you money for it and you’ll most probably get scammed.

Hey everytime that i try to connect to the irc server, i get a cannot connect permission denied, anyone know of a fix?
So I have a screenshot of my torrent client ratio (over 15, with 1.16 tb uploaded), but the sites I use right now(demonoid and pirate bay) don’t accurately record my ratio, if at all. Could a screenshot of my bittorrent suffice in place of a private torrent site?

Initially I wanted to join due to all the good reviews, but after reading all those “what.cd how-to’s” (i don’t specifically mean this article/tutorial, but in general), i really started to think i should stay away and make my life easier.
I truly believe the stuff they have at what.cd is great, but what the heck seriously? being queued for over 4 hours for an interview? and if you miss, you’ll have to be re-queued?
I’ve been on various private trackers, this is the most ridiculous invite system i’ve ever seen. although all those so called interview questions are basically like common sense to me, I don’t have time for all of this waiting and waiting, then what… get rejected due to having an average internet speed?
My opinion is, sharing on the internet is all about… sharing, and fun. I agree that certain rules need to be applied, but not like this getting-a-job interview. Heck I never had to wait for hours to meet an interviewer for any of my JOB application!
maybe i’ll give it a shot when I’m retired and have nothing else better to do with my time.

I keep meaning to join a private tracker or other form of darknet. I seed way more than I download, despite Comcast’s occasional throttling of “unknown” (encrypted) connections, and I have been known to upload some rare files and large high quality collections.
One problem: I haven’t come up with anything I can’t find.
I mean I’m sure there’s some great esoteric relatively unknown music out there on what.cd and other private trackers… But I’m glutted with that already. These days if I want to hear something I’ve never heard of, I just turn on a (non-Pandora! tried Jango?) free web based music service and listen hands-free.
If I know what I want, I search for it (even Google works fine, though TPB is more direct) and BAM there it is. I think I’ve found a handful of albums in the last year that WEREN’T on TPB and a simple web search turned up plenty of direct download sites offering that album, which I then… posted on TPB.
I’m not talking Lady GaGa here, I’m talking old school vinyls, local artists, rare tracks, you-name-it. Maybe I’m better at quickly finding relevant search results than other people, but it just isn’t that hard.
Private trackers are mostly a great way to improve security.
I’m not that concerned. I’ve been using p2p and newsgroups and before that BBSs to get my files since before there was a World Wide Web. I’ve never been infected by a virus nor even gotten a warning from any ISP or other agency.
I simply have no need for a private tracker… Yet.

Yeah, offhand I only have 25 albums in 320kbps by Wu Tang clan, no doubt there are many more if i knew any particular name to search for.
A quick Google search revealed about… 230gb of MP3s matching Wu.
As I said, if I knew what I was looking for I’m sure I’d find more.
I’ve got over 250gb of MP3s, nearly all from TPB. I had about 180gb more that I haven’t bothered replacing after an external drive got smashed.
The public tracker used by TPB hosts about 70% of all (known) torrent traffic in the world. I’d hardly call that being kept in darkness.
People complain about leeching all day, but most download issues I’ve seen are the downloader’s fault for improper configuration. Good torrents get seeded quite well in my experience.
My string quartet collection has over 30 good seeds in Peer Exchange and the torrent isn’t even listed yet… Can’t be that many people listening to string quartets, so I figure that’s pretty good.
Besides, if I really want to share something, I post it publicly, not on some private tracker where only a few can get at it.
TPB is now blocked by my ISP so I accessed it via Tor. I get any music I want from Usenet, but 5 of the albums I wanted to check out were not to be had, TPB had nothing, zilch, so maybe what.cd is the only way to go unfortunately.

Ah, so you want FLAC files? I personally dislike them because:
1) They take up WAY more space than 320kbps MP3s. It would be impossible for me to store my entire collection in a lossless format without buying a lot more hard drives.
2) They are STILL unsupported by many devices.
3) You can’t hear the difference between a true 320kbps MP3 and a lossless file. This has been proven over and over. 128kbps generally sucks but any bitrate above 320kbps LAME is indistinguishable to the human ear. Most audiophiles over 30 can’t even hear a difference between a properly ripped 256kbps file and a FLAC.
4) I don’t rip things to other formats, which is really the only reason to hang onto a bunch of lossless files: You plan to convert them to something lossy later.
That said, some files just aren’t available in a decent format on public sites like The Pirate Bay. But posting them on a private tracker limits their audience and availability, rather than improving it. If you really want a file to be obtainable, public trackers are where you should upload.
Private trackers are useful for security for the operators and uploaders, not maximizing availability for those seeking new or rare content.
In other words, if you get the file from private channels but then upload it to another private channel, you’re really just creating your own problem.

OK that just makes it sound like you don’t know what you’re talking about. Double blind tests have scientifically PROVEN that humans CANNOT tell which is a lossless FLAC and which is a 320kbps MP3. In fact most of the people tested who claimed to dislike MP3s chose the 320kbps MP3s as sounding “the best”.
Also, lossless FLAC is LOSSLESS, that means there is NO difference between typical FLAC files and their original source. We’re talking higher fidelity than CDs, vinyl, even 24bit studio playback. Headphones and home stereos of ANY grade introduce more loss and distortion than 320kbps MP3 compression.
In short, if you say 320kbps sounds bad, either:
1) Your music sounds bad.
2) You don’t know what you’re talking about.
3) You’re lying.
The ONLY reason to use WAV files is if your hardware is so specialized or outdated that it cannot decode FLAC or other formats. So in a studio, sure, mix and master with WAV clips. But for listening? Any difference you hear is the result of ignorant encoder settings or crappy equipment.
Which is all secondary to my main point:
Private trackers limit availability.
Some content may only be available on private trackers, but if you want to share, you should upload to a public tracker. Otherwise you are just another person squatting on data, essentially saying “this data is for me and for him but not for you”.
Plus, if even one machine in a group is compromised, using a private tracker is even LESS secure for the downloader because having fewer peers makes each peer more likely to connect to the “bad” machine.
Private trackers are essentially a gimmick. A semi-exclusive club with little or no oversight of the security or affiliation of those who join. They are advantageous for the host, not the user. Again, the only reason to connect to a private tracker is to get content you can’t find elsewhere, and if you really believe in data freedom, you should then repack the files as a new torrent and post it on a public site for everyone to enjoy.

For clarity it should be reiterated that FLAC means no difference than the SOURCE. That doesn’t mean you can get higher fidelity converting a CD to FLAC above the original CD. Same for vinyl or any other source.
I use .wav files to burn cd’s for listening in my vehicle with premium sound. I haven’t yet tried burning 320kbs mp3′s but have had phenominal results with .flac > .wav > cd. I get to hear all the separation of the stereo mix, clear ride cymbal hits to clean bottom-end bass & drums and all the mid-range sounds in between. I’ll try burning the same musical piece with both formats and see if there is really a difference.
Avoid converting anything unless you have to.
For ripping backups of your own CDs, try creating a disc image (.iso or .img) then burn the image to another disc. This will produce an absolute perfect bit-for-bit exact duplicate. (Barring error-correction issues with discs you created using copy protection, in which case turn error correction off during the image creation process and you’ll be fine.)
If you must work from existing audio files, most burning software converts anything you intake into temporary WAV files anyway, so don’t bother converting to other formats first. Any extra conversion only introduces the possibility of loss.
I use CDR TFE because it supports all disc types and options and has great drive and disc testing features, all in a free app available from Sourceforge:

I believe you can drag FLAC files straight into CDR TFE, but as I said it’ll convert to WAV files automatically before burning.
MP3 is very good for compatibility with other devices. Many new car audio decks have USB ports you can plug a flash drive right into. Some even play FLAC files. It’s also good if you’re like me and prefer hooking your PC up directly to your stereo and keeping all your music on one hard drive, eliminating the need to change discs or convert anything at all.

Lord Prefect is half right and highly emotive without showing data and citing sources of his ‘so called’ scientific double blind tests. He should go over to TC electronics library for tons of real world information about listening tests and our capabilities with hearing differentials. With MP3 format there are inherint large chunks of frequency spectrum WHOLLY removed from the source. Some people hear that glaring and some don’t. It’s rather subjective. Depends on the bit rate encoded especially!

I agree with the Flac aspect but it comes down to preference. Flac will take up almost double the processor power on computers just to playback and it really isn’t much smaller than source lossless either .wav or .aiff (.aiff is the native mac audio format exactly like .wav)
And the fact Flac is barely supported by the millions of devices out there it makes no sense to me. But Flac on if you feel! It’s pretty easy to re-encode with proper tools. I prefer just to share .aiff files or .mp3. I was into .aac for a while but realized it too was not supported by anything outside of fucking apple. I use a mac (had to use it for professional tools in audio and graphics) , but I hate the corporation as it’s become some sort of hipster shiner. Great idea with this website. I’m considering applying. I used to share LPCD (records to 1644 ) on demonoid and had a great sharing circle and now looking for another outlet for my rarities. – I don’t share the same old shit.

I was more than skeptical about FLAC and direct from the source 320kb/s mp3 rips, as far as sounding any different to the human ear. Skeptical as in right up there with oxygen free AC power cables (that then go into a transformer LOL).
After many hours upon hours of testing over at least 2 weeks (many months ago) that started with mp3′s I’d download then moved up to mp3′s I’d create. It got to the point of having my gf randomly pick between a flac version and an mp3 without telling me (both downloaded and created, always marked) version of the same song over nice headphones, crappy headphones, a nice stereo, even a nice car audio system. I correctly picked the format over 99% of the time. While sometimes I felt like I was just guessing, anytime I’d hear both formats of the same song I never thought they sounded exactly the same. Other times it was almost obvious. I gave up fighting it and accepted flac as my format of choice.
I really didn’t want to due to space and compatibility, but it is what it is. I understand this is anecdotal as it gets especially going against so much reasoning, but it’s also the truth. Unless I was fantastically lucky (or unlucky), the statistics alone convinced me.
Anyway, that’s why I want a what.cd invite, thanks for all the good info about that. Public sites don’t have a very large or consistent selection of flac.
