Paul Spoerry consulting site launched

PaulSpoerry | February 28, 2009

Since the side work business seems to be kicking up again I decide to roll out a separate site for my consulting services. The new site can be found at http://consulting.paulspoerry.com. It’s still a bit of a work in progress but feel free to swing by and check it out.

More news and videos on Spb Mobile Shell 3.0

PaulSpoerry | February 27, 2009

A super secret site has popped up (ok prolly not SUPER secret) highlighting more about the upcoming Spb Mobile Shell 3.0. Version 3.0 was announced at Mobile World Congress February 16th and is not released yet. However, if you buy Spb Mobile Shell 2.1.5 (the most current on Spb’s site) you’ll get a free upgrade to 3.0! The current version only costs $29.95.

I’ve used Spb Mobile Shell 2.x. Plain and simple it rawks. I had an HTC Touch (CMDA version) and the carrier locked down TouchFlo was a piece of crap. Slow and loaded with carrier junk. I dumped it in favor of Spb Mobile Shell 2.x and never looked back. I’ve since upgraded to an HTC Touch Pro. Same deal, TouchFlo3D is slow… however with custom ROM’s and tweaks you can make it seriously rock. Will I have a NEED for Mobile Shell 3.0? Check out the video and the impressive list of new features… it’ll surely give TF3D a run for it’s money as it comes with the following new features:

  • Widgets
  • Professional and lifestyle home screens
  • Facebook integration
  • 3D screen switcher
  • Kinetic scrolling
  • Windows Mobile 6.5 support

You really need to see the video to get the fully effect of what Spb has done with this release.

Death to QuickTime – Windows 7 has built in .mov support.

PaulSpoerry | February 27, 2009

Apple Update ScreenIf you’re like me you hate seeing the image to the right… the Apple Update. Well, Microsoft has some good news for movie fans. If you want to watch .mov files in Windows 7, you don’t need to install Apple’s QuickTime. Say goodbye to those annoying updates, popups, and prompts to download other Apple software like itunes, Safari, etc. (I hate Quicktime almost as much as I hate iTunes).

The support for .mov files was mentioned deep in a long list of changes that are coming to the Windows 7 Release Candidate.

On the Engineering Windows 7 blog, in a post entitled ‘Some changes since beta for the RC’, Chaitanya Sareena, Senior Program Manager on the Core User Experience team, says “We’ve since added support for Windows Media Player to natively support the .mov files used to capture video for many common digital cameras.”

Awesome news if you watch trailers in .mov format (particularly Apple Movie Trailers), or if you camera outputs to the .mov format. On any other Windows system you have to have QuickTime (or… as I’d recommend, VLC media player) to watch a .mov file.

GMail Attachments Improved – multiple attachments

PaulSpoerry | February 26, 2009

Gmail improved substantially the interface for uploading attachments: now you can select multiple attachments at once and there’s a progress bar that displays the status of your uploads. It’s much easier to upload multiple files from a folder, although you still need to use a third-party extension to attach files using drag-and-drop.

If you don’t see it yet, log out of Gmail and then log back in. One thing still missing though is being able to imbed images in your email.

Charter’s 16Mbps rawks

PaulSpoerry | February 26, 2009

Charter’s 16Mbps/2Mbps tier has arrived in central Nebraska, portions of Missouri, and in Madison, Wisconsin. I signed up… during peak times I don’t see the speeds listed below, but when I run a speed test in the early morning… well… just check out the results:

The company has announced they’ll be offering 60Mbps/5Mbps service in the St. Louis area, for somewhere around $139.99 ($129.99 bundled). That’s a bit out of my price range and realistically more than I probably need (I said NEED folks not WANT).
