Windows 7 USB Download Tool Lets You Install Windows from a Thumb Drive

PaulSpoerry | December 11, 2009

If you’re trying to install Windows 7 on a netbook (or are having issues with your PC’s optical drive), the free USB Download Tool from Microsoft allows you to take a .ISO image and turn it into a bootable flash drive.

This was created not only for netbook users, but for anyone that opted to download Windows 7 from Microsoft in lieu of ordering an installation DVD. Windows 7 USB Download Tool can create a bootable flash drive (or DVD, if you prefer) from the downloaded .ISO file in quick fashion—just install it and follow the on-screen prompts. Note that if you opt to use a flash drive, it must be 4GB or larger to hold all the files.

The coolest part: Microsoft has open sourced this little app. Why, you ask? They got a bit of flak early on in the project for re-using open-source code and improperly documenting it (as well as making the program itself closed source), but true to their word that it was only a mistake, it’s been brought back and declared open source for all to use. So if you still haven’t gotten Windows 7 installed on that netbook of yours, head on over to CodePlex, Microsoft’s open-source repository, and download the tool now.

Apple Strike Out At Windows 7 Launch With New Ads

PaulSpoerry | October 23, 2009

Whoever does the advertising for Apple is amazing. The commercials keep getting better and better (yes yes yes, I’m still a PC guy… but these are hilarious).

Gmail Alerts in Windows 7 Taskbar with Gmail Notifier Plus

PaulSpoerry | August 23, 2009

Gmail Notifier Plus rests in the new Windows 7 taskbar and allows you to easily access several components of Gmail quickly. The app uses Gmail’s secured RSS feed to retrieve mail. The notifier has two major features that make it a good implementation into the new taskbar.
Windows 7 Gmail Notifier Plus

Login screen lets you set how often to check for new messages

Jumplist Access:

Windows 7 Gmail Notifier Plus

Right clicking on the Gmail Notifier Plus icon will bring up a jumplist that lists your most recent unread messages. A counter is shown at the top but the jumplist only allows for 10 maximum titles to be displayed. Below are some common tasks that increase productivity.

Message Preview:

Probably the coolest feature of the notifier is that if you hover your cursor over the icon, it will activate thumbnail previews that show an excerpt of your unread mail. The app makes great use of the thumbnail feature to display other alerts as well.

Note that the application is only at version 1.0, and may contain some bugs. Providing feedback will probably help the programmer to improve on the app.

The Gmail Notifier plus was created by daty2k1. You can download it from the Neowin forums here. (Requires registration)

Open Files from the Taskbar in Windows 7

PaulSpoerry | August 13, 2009

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always dropped files directly on the quick launch buttons to quickly and easily open them in the application the shortcut points to, but now Windows 7 doesn’t let you do that—by default, at least.

When you try and drag a file onto a taskbar button in Windows 7, you’ll be prompted to “Pin to Application”, instead of opening the file.

Pin to Notepad

If you right-click the taskbar button, you’ll see that now that file has been pinned there.

Pinned Items

What you need to do instead, is hold down the Shift key while dragging the file to the taskbar button, and it will change to “Open with Application” instead.

Open with Notepad

It’s one of those simple tips that can seriously save you some time.

Windows 7 RTM Available for MSDN & TechNet Subscribers

PaulSpoerry | August 7, 2009

The bits are available now! WINDOWS 7 versions available for download on TechNet and MSDN download sites no longer carry the Release Candidate (RC) label. While the software will not go on general sale until October 22, the full version of Windows 7 is now available to hundreds of thousands of potential users. There’s still no formal announcement in TechNet’s news area, which still talks about RC, the final files are appearing in the subscribers’ download area.

All flavors area available including Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions, subscribers can even download the Home Basic and Starter editions, which won’t be for sale to US consumers.

I grabbed my copy yesterday and it was the smoothest, fastest Windows install today. So far I’m pretty pleased.
