Four more Google+ power user tips

August 11, 2011 by Paul Spoerry Leave a Comment

Google+ has many great features, here’s four more tips for making the most of Google+: hi res chat, displaying your +1’s publicly, mass invites for your friends, and filtering your notifications.

Enable hi-resolution video

I’ve covered video chat enhancements by enabling them via Gmail Labs in the past. Google+ also gives you the ability to enable hi-resolution video chat through it’s interface. Simple sign onto chat, hit the drop down arrow (or your availability) and click on Settings. In the middle of the screen you’ll see an option to enable hi-resolution video, click that and instantly have better video quality.

Display your public +1’s on your profile

I’ve always wondered why +1’s on the web don’t show on my public profile. It turns out they can, they’re just disabled by default. Enabling your +1’s on your Google+ profile is simple though. Click on Edit Profile, then look for the +1 (highlights in red in the image below). An option will display to “Show this tab on your profile”, check the box and save your profile and now you’re +1’s are visible.

Mass invite your friends with a publicly sharable link

In order to invite people to Group+ used to require you knew their email address. Google has greatly simplified the process with their new invite system. Simply click on Invite Friends as you always would and now you’ll be provided a simple url which you can email or post on other social networks.

Filter your notifications

Google+‘s notification system is useful, streamlined, and simple enough to use. However, once you get a high level of activity on the social network your notifications can fill up quickly. Google has provided the ability to filter your notifications screen by mentions, added to circles, post by you/others, photos you’ve been tagged in and…. games.
