I need extra inspiration to work hard. Sometimes it’s enough to look at how happy my clients are, and other times it’s enough to look at the money I am earning. But, I’m probably not the standard business person. I need something extra to keep me going.

There are always motives behind the money

I am actually not that interested in money per se. That’s not why I started my business, and why I became a solo entrepreneur. The truth is, money is an important part of any business, but I am always looking at what I can accomplish with money. It’s not about my personal life, I just need the money to get by, and to keep my family safe and happy. That’s about it. What I am looking for is to accomplish something that will have an impact in the lives of people.

That’s what I want to accomplish with my business, and that’s what I want to accomplish with the money I am earning. I am currently creating a vision, and part of the vision will be words like:

• Happiness
• Freedom
• Help

I know, I am a solo entrepreneur, but I need a vision to keep me going the extra mile.

Happiness

I keep asking myself what makes me happy, and I have been focusing on doing things that makes me happy every single day. I love working. But, what I really love about my job is helping people. I remember the time when I was turning pro, back when I was working at the University. I was certain that I was happy doing what I was doing every single day, but I realized that I didn’t get a chance to use my skills, and I didn’t have the necessary freedom to make the right kind of impact.

Freedom

To me, freedom is not just about working from home, or deciding what project you want to be working on. Freedom is a lot more. I am telling myself a story about a man walking the streets like any ordinary man, he is singing a song for the people surrounding him. He is sharing his emotions and his thoughts about what’s happening in the world. He makes people listen. He makes people think. And, one day, people will start to act, because they finally understand that what he was singing was not just any song, but a way of life.

My kind of freedom reminds me of Searching for Sugar Man. A true story about Sixto Rodriguez a Detroit folksinger who had a short-lived recording career, not selling albums. Unknown to Rodriguez, his musical story continued in South Africa where he became a pop music icon and inspiration for generations. It’s about the freedom to have the chance to make an impact.

Help

I want my business to be part of something much bigger. I want my business to be part of a movement. I don’t have all the answers yet, but I have been looking at a business like TOMS Shoes & Eyewear for inspiration. With every pair of shoes you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need. One for one. With every pair of eyewear you purchase, TOMS will help give sight to a person in need. One for one.

I don’t know exactly how I can make an impact, but that’s part of my vision.

What I am currently doing

I have published my first novel. It’s just the beginning. I have a lot to learn, but I believe that by writing stories, I can get the attention of more people, and eventually, they’ll understand what I am trying to accomplish – and hopefully they’ll join me on my journey. That’s exactly why my first novel is completely free. I am going to do the same with my marketing. I want to help teach people what I have been learning, and I truly believe that marketing can help change the world. My passion for marketing is why I have joined KIVA, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. KIVA is leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, and lets me lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world. Every month I will be lending money to people and businesses to help those in need, because that will help people create better lives for themselves and their families.

This is just the beginning.
