One of the designers of the F-16 breaks down why the F-35 is a POS

June 17, 2014 by Paul Spoerry 19 Comments

My favorite quote when asked "So what is the point of this plane?" and he replies, "The point is to spend money. That is the mission of the airplane. It's for the US Congress to send money to Lockhead. That's the real mission of the airplane."

Along the way he he explains why it'll never succeed, the premise is dumb, that stealth is a myth (he actually calls it a "scam"), that designing for 3 military branches just increases the bureaucracy, etc.

If you're at all interested in military fighters this is something cool to spend 10 mins on to start your #Tuesday .

The Whitehouse kitchen just requested that it also double as a waffle iron. Don't worry, it'll only take another $2bn and 5 years of development.

Wow. He is making some pretty shocking statements. Given his background, he has a lot of credibility.

One piece of proof that there is no significant difference between our two political parties.

Obama hasn't even raised a concern about this corporation enriching piece of shit, but he allowed food stamps to be cut.
Funding an over priced, under performing aircraft makes us less safe. This is at best reckless and short sighted, at worst criminal and treasonous.

i heard this guy speak before…the F-15, F-16, and F-18, as well as A-10 platforms are still the best.

Reminds me of the f104 Starfighter scandal of the 60's. Another plane that cost more than planned, did not perform as planned, and had major limitations to its intended role. That was Lockheed too.

Just like the F-111 and any other aircraft our government has procured

Interesting point of view, I guess. He lost some cred with me when he talked about Gripen as an alternative. Might be more interesting to hear someone discuss the future of expensive manned aircraft vs UAV's.

The F-35 may be a lemon. But the problems will eventually be fixed, and the technology developed for it will evolve to define the future of manned aviation and space flight.

If it's piloted, it's not a nextgen aircraft.

…and our stupid government in Australia was told this years ago and still went ahead with the purchase just recently!!!

+Willis McCain That's an incredibly myopic statement considering the JSF program (that this was born from) started in 1993, and was commissioned in 1996 under the first Bush.

"Funding an over priced, under performing aircraft makes us less safe. This is at best reckless and short sighted, at worst criminal and treasonous. "

It's failures and delays have survived multiple presidencies since the first Bush so that'd make them all criminals (which you could argue is true but you get my point).

If you google it… everything says that right now 1250,000 jobs are involved in the project. So if this very well versed fighter developer says it's crap then while I agree we need  scrap it, it's not as simple as just killing the project. The states who have a stake in it because of workers will fight to keep it alive, the unions involved will as well, etc.

I do agree that cutting SNAP was fucking insane and so out of alignment with what Obama says and the Democratic party as a whole say they stand for… and frankly, if the Democrats sell out the poor and disenfranchised then this country is done.

+Virgil Anderson Even if they were to scrap it, I'm sure they've learned a lot and either way we'll have gained technological advancements.

The F/A-18 was a piece of junk at first too. Something about multi-mission that just doesn't work. After the 'B' model it got better, but the 35 will have wasted billions before that happens. Personally, I always liked the F-14/15's the Tomcat and Eagle were solid tried and proven airframes, as was the A-10. Why effort was not put into simply modernizing these platforms and augmenting with the F-16 is of course, a purely political question as is 99% of matters effecting service member safety.

anybody into the F-14s?  first time i saw that design was on the robotech animated series in the 80's, then i went to san diego to see one live, i ask the instructor if they can turn into robots…he laugh and said he watched robotech with his kids and then said "that would be cool if they did."  such a fun memory.
