Post Editor for Google+ v1.1.0

April 3, 2014 by Paul Spoerry 35 Comments

Newly updated Post Editor for Google+  – a Chrome Extension for formatting Google+ posts!

v1.1.0 addresses most of the issues reported with the first version. It still only focuses on the main post box. I know a lot of v1.0 users want it to work on comments as well. It's next on my ToDo list!

Google+ doesn't offer a ton of formatting options for your posts and the ones it does have you have to remember the markup to use. This isn't so big a deal for those of us who use it regularly or have been around since the beginning. However, it comes up often when I talk with new or infrequent users. So I created a Google Chrome extension called 'Post Editor for Google+' to help!

Post Editor for Google+ adds formatting buttons to the bottom of the post box so you can easily style your posts. It also includes a variety of symbols that you can automatically inject into your post.

You can grab the extension from the Chrome Web Store: http://goo.gl/ywkWj3

you guys ought to also install the AutoSave extension. suppose i'm writing a message in this here lil' boxey thing and chrome decides to go fuck me and break somehow, canceling my message. or google+ decides to refresh and i lose my message. AutoSave automatically backs up your recent inputs and you can simply hit the little red disk to promptly put that big long post you worked so laboriously right back where it belongs. you're probably not even missing a single character.

p.s. no, i am not affiliated in any way with AutoSave. just damned tired of gplus breaking and losing my long winded posting.

p.p.s you can also highlight text and use ctrl-i, ctrl-b for italics and bold respectively. i'm not aware of keybindings for underline so the post editor is awesome help for that, as well, the symbols.

I added the post editor, how do I get it to show up? I opened a post and typed and it's not there.  The store says it is added   +Paul Spoerry

+David Ford I know a lot of people who speak highly of autosave! Good recommendation.

+Michelle McRAE Seriously, +Friends+Me is awesome. +Shannon Hernandez is totally spot on with this one and I use that service too.

+Daniel Koeker I can certainly add more. The very first version I made had so many that they scrolled off the screen and became a little unusable so I paired it down to what's in there now. I've considered creating an options page for the extension and loading that up with symbols and letting people pick which ones they want to show in the drop down. Might be cool for a future release.

+Ron Kaiser Some people have to restart Chrome. No idea why… I've never had to and I've tried it on several computers. Also… the elements required need to be present before the extension can attach to them. So if things are loading slowly (like sometimes the chat bar takes longer than I'd expect on my Chromebook) and you try to share to quickly it might not be there. Often you can just hit cancel and then go to share again and it'll display.

+Paul Spoerry I know why it didn't work, I usually run Google + in an incognito window.
The editor works fine in a regular window.
Anyway I can tell Chrome to run the editor there?

    Looks great. I'm surprised not to see more bullets in the symbol dropdown.  • ● ► ➤ ▪ ✓ ✔ ✘

Now we only need one button to add a file to a post?

  29. Paul Spoerry says

    April 3, 2014 at 5:42 pm

? Google already provides those +Raoul Teeuwen with the Photos/Link/Video/Event buttons on the share box.

  30. Raoul Teeuwen says

    April 3, 2014 at 5:53 pm

Thanks Paul, those i know. I want to share any file, like a PDF, Word etc, by only 1 click. Afaik you need more clicks to share a file other than Photo/Link/Video/Event

  31. Paul Spoerry says

    April 3, 2014 at 6:03 pm

+Raoul Teeuwen You would need to use something like Google Drive, Dropbox, etc and then use the link button (or simply paste the link into the sharebox).

  32. Raoul Teeuwen says

    April 3, 2014 at 6:04 pm

That's what i mean: too hard compared to the other file types

  33. Paul Spoerry says

    April 3, 2014 at 7:04 pm

This extension only deals with formatting of posts. File uploads with external services is not something this extension is focused on.
