The problem is finding someone who will destroy the ring. Frodo fails.
Adam Alexander says
Not really a hole… I'm fairly certain that Sauron had air defence (Nazgul on proto-drakes) that would rip any giant eagles to shreds… and one doesn't simply fly into Mordor.
Paul Spoerry says
Uh don't the eagles kick the shit out of some flying Nazgul at the end?
Bryan Stark says
LOLLL yes i just watched The Hobbit and when Gandolf sends that butterfly to bring back giant hawks I'm like "WTF dude! you could have done that from the beginning! but instead you make everyone walk?"
Jo Johnson says
Maybe the eagles won't go to Mordor until the Dark Lord is destroyed. Try reading the books.
Jeff Andresen says
I never saw that as a plot hole. The giant eagles weren't just dumb animals, they were a sentient race. They need to be asked, not just made to do stuff. Even when he sends the butterfly, there was no guarantee they would come.
As was previously said, read the books.
Bryan Stark says
LOL Jo my comment was made tongue-in-cheek, sorry if you misunderstood…. and why read the book when there's a movie? 😀
Jo Johnson says
Cos the books are really exciting.
Jeff Andresen says
And by only seeing the movie you miss out on almost everything that makes the series great.
Bryan Stark says
nevermind you guys are way too serious…
Ron Clayton says
Not sure I buy it. Why did Tolkien not give any foreshadowing or hint of this in the books?
Paul Spoerry says
I've read the books. And yes the eagles were not just things to be commanded but a sentient race. Then again, they hated the shit outta some orcs so why they wouldn't want to help…. well…. this guy does a way better job of explaining: http://periannath.com/feature/why-doesnt-frodo-just-ride-an-eagle-to-mount-doom/

Also please note the corrupting influence of the Ring of Power… it isn't a toy to simply walk it into Mordor … one does not simply go to Mordor with the One Ring … you need a Hobbit … who can mask the influence of the Ring … can be silent … can be small … can be brave … unsmellable by Orcs/Goblins/Nazgul etc etc … and most importantly won't try to become the Dark One … Pfffffttt…. ger'off ma' porch … 🙂
Also I like the explanation that The Eagles were recording 'Hotel California' … without which … the 70s would have led the 80s to become a complete wasteland … then where would we be ???
😀

Um……..nope. First, if you're going to use the movie to support your case, you might as well stop right there an pack it up. The movies greatly distorted the story. Second, it was only by a throw of chance that they passed over the mountains near where the eagles nested, Frodo could have just as easy chosen the Gap. Third, when he said 'fly you fools;, he meant run like hell. That usage of the word can be found else were in the books, and always meant the same, run like hell.
