I don't think we're seeing a gathering up of arms in preparation of a premeditated confrontation between police and citizens. I think the cops are getting ready for the worst, in case the verdict angers the community (history gives them cause to do so), and the people are arming themselves, not to fight the police, but to defend themselves from the rampaging rioters and looters that will come out of the outrage (you know the cops won't protect them, history supports that as well, and they'll have their hands full anyway).
