80% Of Americans Support Mandatory Labels On Foods Containing DNA

January 19, 2015 by Paul Spoerry 13 Comments

80% Of Americans Support Mandatory Labels On Foods Containing DNA. DNA!
A recent survey conducted by the Oklahoma State University Department of Agricultural Economics found that 80.44% of respondents supported a government policy mandating labels on foods containing DNA. Not GMOs. DNA, the genetic material contained in every living thing known to science and practically every food, GMO or otherwise.

Read that title again… Not GMOs but DNA. I believe this study also highlights most Americans are idiots. Every month the Oklahoma State University Department of Agricultural Economics conduct a survey and the most recent month's survey included a question regarding the institution of government policies concerning food. The results (http://goo.gl/ae0F1R) indicate that "a large majority (82%) support mandatory labels on GMOs." What's hilarious is that roughly "the same amount (80%) also support mandatory labels on foods containing DNA."

Its worth noting that people that "respond" are not necessarily going to be a fair representation of the population though.
It basicly biass towards the "most passionate" people which probably means those with the more extreme views.

As for GMO labelling, my personal view is Id rather have pesticide labelling, as (in some cases) (some) pesticides have caused actual proven problems, vs purely hypothetical scenarios with GMOs.
The most "natural" solution some propose is worst of all though. Species introduction has been far more devastating then anything else historically as it annoys me when some have the idea that is "safer".

I have a right to know who's DNA is on my food!

Good we won't have to change all our sugar and salt labels because of this…

+Travis Owens That made me laugh… and then think, "ew".

+Thomas Wrobel I think they stated that it was a representative sample, but I don't see specifics of what they state that means. So you could be right.

As for GMOs, we first need to nail down what that means. Humans have been genetically modifying our food for ages to achieve certain desired traits such as improved taste, yield, or disease resistance. So when we say GMO are we talking about those… or just those modified by adding something that couldn't have happened by the natural reproductive processes of the organisms?

And yes to the pesticide labeling, etc. It so wild that you can look at the apples with wax on them, the banana's labelled "organic" do NOT look as pretty as the others… but man… taste-wise they are WAY better. I'd also like our meat to be labelled to show which ones have antibiotics shoved into them because they'd die under the conditions they are kept in. (the reality is Americans eat way to much meat; if we ate less of it we'd have less of an issue)

+Paul Spoerry Well, I was going by "80.44% of respondents".
And yes, agreed on all points.
At the very least GMO could be divided into transgenetic and other. But its such a catch-all now as to be meaningless.

Dont plants have dna too? Of some sort? Seems like that means everything needs labels?

From now on I am only eating salt.
    Oh, wait, thats non-organic. crap.
Water then. Just water. I'll be safe from everything!

I don't like DNA in my food, I find it's too chewy.

But your water supply is filled with dyhydro-oxide which kills thousands every year!
