The one complaint I've always had about cable companies. The whole monopoly w/o a monopoly thing. There may be multiple cable providers, but in some kind of collusion agreement, they stay out of each other's turf. Therefore they have a 'local monopoly'. Complete BS
…..and this is what need to be addressed, not Net Neutrality. I'd rather see this fixed (unless it does, but I've not heard that).

I think both are issues, but I completely agree… the local monopoly IS a monopoly particularly since ADSL can't compete with cable.

Dish, Direct TV, OTT, YouTube, various online offerings including HBO, Netflix, AT&T, Amazon. There are also over builders like in various communities like Astound, Verizon fiber, Google fiber and Suddenlink Communications. Also, DVD and Blu-Ray sales from local and online stores. Must include Broadcast TV which is now all digital. These all entities compete for the same entertainment dollar space. I looked at St Louis and found available offerings. This helps tell a different story.

+Real Gate Considering the first comment was how you only ever get the choice of one cable company, and the second comment was clearly directly about Internet (cable vs DSL), you're comment.. at best is talking about a different story but I'll bite…..
Dish/DirectTV aren't even the same compared to cable. Bad weather and you need to be inside… tough luck your signal goes to crap. The same goes for over the air local… and now that it's all digital instead of it just being fuzzy it pixelates and becomes even more unwatchable. YouTube, Netflix, Amazon… you can't get those without an Internet connection. AT&T internet (at least here) is DSL… which cannot compete with my 120mb cable connection (though they are laying fiber so that may change but it's still only fiber to the subdivision, not to the curb). Currently, we cannot get Verizon fiber, Google fiber, et al. We cannot get municipal broadband because of laws preventing local municipalities to build out that sort of thing. This may change with the new FCC rulings but certainly will take time if that ends up happening.
