Decision in Microsoft case could set dangerous global precedent

Microsoft isn’t fighting to help drug dealers, it’s fighting to save your privacy
Microsoft will battle the US Department of Justice in court tomorrow over whether it should hand over emails tied to a narcotics investigation, stored in its Irish data center — and …

A verdict against the company could be troubling, legal experts warn, as governments consider whether they can require tech firms to reveal private data.

This is a massively important case that could have far reaching implications. The very notion of privacy on the Web could be eroded over time. Microsoft believes that, “When one government wants to obtain email that is stored in another country, it needs to do so in a manner that respects existing domestic and international laws.” I for one agree… and I'm glad a company with deep pockets will be under fire as this might set a dangerous precedent.
