Microsoft is auto-downloading Windows 10 onto your pc

September 11, 2015 by Paul Spoerry 11 Comments

Microsoft is auto-downloading 6GB to your PC without permission
If you’ve noticed that your PC’s hard drive is a little cramped lately, it might be because Microsoft is automatically downloading between 3.5GB to 6GB of Windows 10 installation files …

Just in CASE you want it (you do) they're downloading between 3.5GB and 6GB of installation files onto your system if you have Windows Automatic Updates enabled.

Apparently, if you delete the files… they'll just get downloaded again. For those of use without ridiculous data caps that's not that big of a deal if they do it when you're not using your computer. Still, I believe in OPT-IN instead of opt-out. If you want to opt-out you can disable Windows Automatic Updates or follow the steps outlined here: http://www.howtogeek.com/228551/how-to-stop-windows-7-or-8-from-downloading-windows-10-automatically/

Users want control – Microsoft can't win the perceptions game all the time with all the people. First people complained that even though they opted in, their neighbour was getting the update, they weren't. Then some people complained that the update was screwing up their machines. On the other hand troubleshooters who wanted fame were appalled that their update was too successful, they wanted it to break so they could have the thrill of being clever enough to fix it. And now, we get people who get the download but they don't want it.

Windows 10 is good expect it wants me to sign in every time it goes to sleep. I've gone to all 3 settings pages and everything, why Microsoft why?

That "Require Password after wake up" behaviour I think has been there in Windows 7,8 and now 10.

Unfortunately it never happened when I had windows 8 but does now, I've been to all the settings pages, ran netplwiz and got no change.

It is a fault, one experienced by many other people. No fix as of yet.

    Thanks though.

Odd +Rust Cohle – I have had Wake From Sleep prompting me for years and years. Could have been even Windows XP….
I just tested the instructions on this machine I am typing right now and successfully set it not to prompt.

It is very annoying, I've tried everything bar going in to the registry.

From some on windows 10 there is no issue, for others there is. Odd indeed.

+Norman Ma +Robert Angle Agreed. I'm pretty pleased with it so far.

+Rust Cohle I'm with +Ananda Sim and haven't experienced that. Very weird.

It only happens on my tablet.

    It's basically this:-

I've done everything the guy has done on Reddit bar getting gpedit. I'm good with troubleshooting windows and do so for friends etc so am certain I've not missed anything. Oh well

I love Windows 10 though so it's no big deal. Thankfully I can set a pin.

. That's why auto-updates is the first thing I did on my computer (although it several years old and running windows 7, so maybe an update might be ok).
