Somebody went and gave Mario AI… now he plays his own game

January 20, 2015 by Paul Spoerry 22 Comments

Researchers at the University of Tubingen, Germany made it so the AI allows Mario to respond to vocal commands and questions. They also made him able to experience emotions and act autonomously in response to those emotions.

It's slightly cheesy sounding, but fun that Mario was used to explore the Carnegie Mellon's speech recognition toolkit so that Mario can understand spoken commands.

    That was amazing!

Wonder how long it will be before this sort of AI will start asking questions like "What am I?" and "Where do Goombas go when they die?". lol

+Vinodh Nagarajan It uses http://cmusphinx.sourceforge.net/ and the language model is called JSGF, or JSpeech Grammar Format: http://www.w3.org/TR/jsgf/ — As far as programming language I don't think that is nearly as important as the underlying concept of machine learning being demonstrated. But for what it's worth: when they demonstrate the screen shot of the knowledge learning part it is a Java-based Swing GUI that looks like Netbeans using an older look-and-feel module (motif?) so it's fair to assume they're using *nix; newer versions of Netbeans and the Netbeans platform would default to a different look and feel on windows or mac osx. IMHO, the search algorithm for planning his movement has far too great of lag to be of use, they should optimize that to do better in the realtime domain.

I don't think it's a game — given the aspect ratio it looks like they used the mario graphics on a custom application used to demonstrate machine learning. Still cool, but better to understand it for what it is. 🙂
