Google Fi gets group plans

October 11, 2016 by Paul Spoerry 2 Comments

Introducing Project Fi’s group plan

You can add up to five additional people to your existing Project Fi account, and manage their data and billing in one central place. Additional group members join your plan at $15 per month (versus $20 for the main line) and then you buy data in the $10/gig buckets and that includes the refund for unused portions.

I've been on Fi for a while now and love it. I'm nearly always around WiFi and my average bill is ~$27. I just ordered a Pixel XL but with it's release the Nexus 6P is down to $399 and the 5X is down to $199. It might not be the best plan for everyone. If you're a heavy data user or mobile streamer something like T-Mob's plan where that's exempt might be more economical. You'd have to analyze your data usage to know for sure but I can say that so far Fi has been great.

I'd love to be on that but $10/gig thing is pretty damn scary for me and my kids.

It really does depend on your usage +Matthew Reynolds. I couldn't bring my fiance onto my plan because she has her own business and streams audiobooks and music nonstop. She uses T-Mobile and doesn't have media count against her data usage (and even if she hits the wall she can up it for a month or use it at lower speeds).

I work out of my house… and if I have to go into the office I can get on wifi there. I'm on wifi at most of my friends places. So my data use is primarily while connected to wifi (they also have public wifi hotspots baked into Fi). But if that usage scenario fits your bill drops to next to nothing. I get money back on my 1 gig per month and have yet to go over. Admittedly, I watch my usage, make sure I download apps and stuff while at home, and that sort of thing. Again, it's very usage dependent so YMMV.
