Google Allo—Google’s new IM app—arrives with “Google Assistant” in tow
Google makes yet another attempt at instant messaging—this time with a cloud twist.
After introducing itself it showed me a video of Lemurs eating grapes. Not even kidding.

I’m a groovy cat who’s into technology, Eastern Thought, and house music. I’m a proud and dedicated father to the coolest little guy on the planet (seriously, I'm NOT biased). I’m fascinated by ninjas, the Internet, and anybody who can balance objects on their nose for long periods of time.
I have a utility belt full of programming languages and a database of all my knowledge on databases... I practice code fu. Oh, I've also done actual Kung Fu, and have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
I run. I meditate. I dance. I blog at PaulSpoerry.com, tweet @PaulSpoerry, and I'm here on Google+.
I'm currently work for IBM developing web enabled insurance applications for IBM and support and develop a non-profit called The LittleBigFund.

I think I'm going to skip it, from reading the reviews, no sms, and for it to really work your contacts really need to be using it as well. What a let down.
I think it's just the first stab into the new assistant which will (and has been shown to be in recent betas) replacing "Google Now". But I agree, limited use for me aside from talking to "it" (versus a person)… and the non-always on encryption is a serious let down.
As one person commented on the allo product page, why couldn't those cool things be loaded into hangouts and we'd be all be happy.
Completely agree. The only argument I've heard is they want to position Hangouts as an enterprise/business product. Weak argument IMHO and as a Fi user Hangouts is the shiat!
