Obama Signs New Law Giving Protection To Atheists
For the first time, atheists and other nonreligious persons are explicitly named as a class protected by the law.
"The freedom of thought, conscience, and religion is understood to protect theistic and non-theistic beliefs as well as the right not to profess or practice any religion."
Yifat Cohen says
I thought separation of church and state was in the constitution…
Paul Spoerry says
Oddly, it's usually the people who believe themselves to be the hardcore Constitutionalists that will be the ones wanting to impose their religion on others +Yifat Cohen. I'm with you though… it says it in Article 6 of the Constitution as well as in the First Amendment.
Yifat Cohen says
So how is this law applies if it's only in the constitution?
And yeah.. I agree with your assessment about the hard-core constitutionalists…
Jess Nut says
The argument is that non-belief, is by it's nature, not a religion and therefore does not follow under any of the laws about religion. This clarifies that to be obviously stupid.
Paul Spoerry says
Exactly. It shouldn't even be needed but the law makes it explicit that you cannot non-belief is covered as well.
