Pope Francis declares evolution and Big Bang theory are real and God is not ‘a magician with a magic wand’
The theories of evolution and the Big Bang are real and God is not “a magician with a magic wand”, Pope Francis has declared. Speaking at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope made comments which experts said put an end to the “pseudo theories” of creationism and intelligent design that some argue were encouraged by his predecessor, Benedict XVI.
“When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so, The Big Bang, which today we hold to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the intervention of the divine creator but, rather, requires it."
I'm not quite sure about that last part… pretty big leap there… but still pretty significant. I wonder if this just puts the nail in the coffin of 'Intelligent Design' for Catholics?
I do not like religions. Nothing good comes out of it.
But this man has earned my respect.
I still disagree with him on many things (and religion in general) but he's certainly been one of the better Popes.
This doesn't negate the idea of intelligent design. It just pushes it back to the beginning of our understanding of time. The answer would be "who put evolution in motion? who caused the big bang?" Nothing new here for those that choose to mix their religion with their science.
This is nothing new. Google Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Gregor Mendel.
I think he will need hire a food taster, make sure to hold on to stair rails and safety proof his Vatican apartment. I foresee some not so accidental accidents coming his way.
