Andy Rubin Nears His Comeback, Complete With an ‘Essential’ Phone
Android’s creator is building a high-end smartphone to be the centerpiece of a series of AI-infused consumer gadgets.
For those who don't know the name, Andy Rubin is the creator of the Android operating system. He was also the head of Google Robotics. The guy kinda knows his shit and has set out to build the next big deal — an artificial intelligence-centric smartphone and smart home products that work together.
Making up the 40-man team at Essential, the name of his new company, are former colleagues from Google as well as talent from Apple, Samsung and Magic Leap.
Rubin is convinced AI is the next big change to ripple through the technology industry. "New computing platforms happen every 10 to 12 years," he said at the Bloomberg Technology Conference in June. "What’s the next platform?… It’s about data and people training AI systems to learn."
