The "in god we trust" was a recent addition to money and the pledge added in the 50's. The actual motto of the United States, created by the founding fathers is "E pluribus unum" (of the many, one), which refers to both the many types of people and many states which make up the nation.
The Star Spangled Banner, much like "in god we trust" was created and added after the fact by subsequent presidents that didn't respect the founder father's wishes that no one religion be held up over others in this country.
