Verizon VPN app protects against shady public WiFi
Verizon is jumping into the VPN game with an app to protect you against sketchier WiFi hotspots — at least, if you’re willing to pay.
Verizon has released an app they call 'Safe Wi-Fi' that uses the encryption of a VPN to protect you against dodgy WiFi hotspots and blocks some ads.
But read the fine print https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/safe-wifi-legal/. Oh wait… that's not the fine print because this is just some rebranded McAfee product So you have to go here: https://www.mcafee.com/enterprise/en-us/about/legal/privacy.html
This "VPN" does all sorts of logging, ties in third-party services to know more about you, and sell your information to third-parties. So it might protect you from your coffeehouse WiFi but Verizon/McAfee are still hoovering up your data and selling it.
A little pricey but a consistently highly rated VPN that doesn't log you is ExpressVPN: https://www.expressvpn.com/ (or if you'd like to use my referral link: https://www.expressrefer.com/refer-friend?referrer_id=14802789&utm_campaign=referrals&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=referral_dashboard)
If you need a free service (you can get free upgrades by tweeting at them each month) TunnelBear will do in a pinch and is super easy to use. https://www.tunnelbear.com/
