Awesome Venue/Promoter Pages on Facebook

July 21, 2011 by Paul Spoerry Leave a Comment

Click to view fullsizeI’ve been all over Google+ lately, and I recently finished an article How To Create Events On Google+, via Google Calendar, on that platform. At best it’s a hack until Google releases an API that can be used. Shortly after that post went up I ran across ReverbNation, which provide two very slick Facebook apps, one for bands, one for venues.

The new app, can be seen in action over on Brooklyn venue The Knitting Factory’s Page. It’s simpler than the band app, but includes a lot of features that make venue/promoter content more shareable and interactive. Best of all it’s free and looks slick.

PayPal Lets You Deposit Checks With Your Phone

May 20, 2011 by Paul Spoerry Leave a Comment

I hate checks… no… I despise checks. I use online banking for almost everything and rarely, if ever, have to dig out the check book to actually write out a check (ugh… that also includes a trip to the MAILBOX. *sigh*), GETTING a check is even worse. I have to go to the bank, I fear keeping the check to long and having money outstanding on someone else’s account, etc.

Back in October of 2010, PayPal added the ability to add money from checks was added to the PayPal app for iPhone. Turns out that’s been a huge hit and nearly a million dollars per month have been uploaded since it was launched. HOORAY FOR SKIPPING THE ATM!

Now you can snap a pic of the front and back of your check and it’ll be processed by PayPal (they suggest holding onto the check for a little bit just to be safe). Once you’ve got your money you can leave it in your PayPal account or EFT it to your bank!

BudgetGadgets review

June 14, 2009 by Paul Spoerry 2 Comments

BudgetGadgets is located in Shenzhen, China. They have been in online retail/wholesale business since 2003, though I had not heard of them until they contacted me via my site. For full disclosure here, they DID contact me and asked if they could send some product for me to review. I received two products, but instead decided to review not just the products but the site itself and the service they provide.

When asked to do a review the folks at BudgetGadgets said I could simply log on to the site, browse around and choose any two gadgets I’d like to review. At the time they did not know I’d be reviewing the site itself (*wink*).

PortableApps.com Suite 1.5 with new menus and customization

March 10, 2009 by Paul Spoerry Leave a Comment

PortableApps Suite 1.5The PortableApps.com Suite, a full-featured app package that runs from a USB drive, has upgraded with a crisper-looking and more customizable menu, the latest versions of a ton of great freeware, and other improvements.

A new theme brings some transparency, mouse-over effects, and display improvements to the PortableApps menu, but the release notes bury the big news—you’ll be able to theme the suite yourself in the next release, due out in less than two weeks. The app icons on the pop-up menu can be renamed or hidden, applications can be launched as an administrator, and the menu can hide all the icons and switch wallpapers on whatever PC you’re on.

A PortableApp thumb drive loaded with a customized Firefox browser, office suites, IM clients, KeePass, and other portable offerings is a great way to get things done when you’re at a computer that’s not your own—or testing out stuff on your system you don’t quite want to install and muck around with.

The PortableApps.com suite comes in three flavors (basic, lite, and standard), is a free download, and launches on Windows systems only. Got a killer PortableApp setup on your thumb drive? Share the app list in the comments.

Charter Implements Bandwidth Caps

February 8, 2009 by Paul Spoerry Leave a Comment

A source familiar with the plans says Charter will be imposing a 100GB cap upon any Charter connection of 15Mbps or less, and a 250GB usage cap for broadband tiers “over 15 Mbps up to 25 Mbps.”

Cable carriers are concerned about being transparent in the way they handle congestion on their networks, given that in 2008, the FCC sanctioned Comcast for lying to consumers about their network management policies. With a new (and potentially more network neutrality focused) FCC boss in Julius Genochowski, cable carriers are making sure that whatever they’re doing — they’re informing customers about it first.

Charter’s new, $140 60Mbps tier will not have any limitations. Speeds of 15Mbps or slower will have a 100GB monthly cap, while 15-25Mbps speeds will have a 250GB monthly cap. “In order to continue providing the best possible experience for our Internet customers, later this month we will be updating our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) to establish monthly residential bandwidth consumption thresholds,” Ketzer confirms. “More than 99% of our customers will not be affected by our updated policy, as they consume far less bandwidth than the threshold allows,” he says.

Charters Acceptable Use Policy can be found here.
